Burgers at Hettie Bells, Salisbury Review

Burgers at Hettie Bells, Salisbury Review

Anyone who knows us personally will know that we are BIG fans of a dinner offer. I'm talking 2 for £x, buy one get one free, you name it, we'll give it a go. Hettie Bells' 2-4-1 burger offer has been on our 'we must try that' list for a good few months now, and this week we finally made it down there to try it out.

Situated opposite the train station, Hettie Bells is both a pub and a cafe. They're open 7am-11pm every day, serving coffees and pastries in the cafe, and beers and burgers in the pub from 11am.

The decor is dark, moody and cosy, perfect for this time of year. We found ourselves a little table for two not far from a tv showing the live departures board for the station. We weren't going anywhere, but if you are, that's pretty neat, huh?

So, the main event, the reason we were there... Smash burgers! Every Tuesday, all of the burgers are 2 for 1, and the best bit? They don't even need to be two of the same type. This worked out really well for us as Elliot was keen to try the Chicken Whippy (buttermilk chicken, vanilla ice cream, hot honey and bacon) whilst I opted for the Ray Mac (double smash patty, deep fried mac 'n' cheese, pickles, burger sauce and lettuce). On the menu is also a double smash patty with beef brisket (Brisket McBeefFace) as well as a vegan option too (Monty Don)!

After a slight wait on the food, our burgers arrived, and oh my... Wow. If the burgers themselves weren't big enough, just look at that mountain of fries... They were both piping hot and crispy! The burgers themselves were delicious and exactly what we were hoping for. The deep fried mac and cheese in mine was sooo good. Smash burgers in Salisbury? We love to see it.

If you haven't already been to Hettie Bells to try their burgers, I highly recommend that you do. You won't be disappointed!

A coffee and a cake at a new-to-me cafe? Sounds like a perfect Saturday morning plan. This morning Elliot and I headed to The Stalls Cafe and it was lovely.

Located in a converted barn on a working farm in Sutton Mandeville, The Stalls Cafe has an eco-friendly approach and serves specialty coffee and locally sourced food.

We both had a latte, Elliot had a bacon roll and I had a lemon and strawberry bun. There was a really good selection of cooked food and pastries on offer and I would absolutely go back to try one of their breakfasts.

They're open Wednesday - Sunday, 9am - 3pm, and I'd definitely recommend taking a drive out to there if you're looking for something to do of a weekend morning...

ps The Stalls Cafe also host a monthly car meet on a Sunday called 'Sunday Startup' if that's you're sort of thing!

Press Invite

On Saturday night, Elliot and I were invited to try something a little bit different... Cholderton Rare Breeds Farm were hosting another of their popular Murder Mystery Nights and we were offered tickets to go down and give it a try!

Essentially, as the name suggests, a crime has been committed and you need to work out whodunnit. There is a back story, all of the suspects (actors) are introduced and then the rest of the evening is spent interacting with or eavesdropping on the suspects.

On our night, the story was all based around a medical clinic called Zephyr. A member of staff had been murdered and each of the characters had some sort of link to the clinic and to the victim.

They each took it in turns visiting the different tables throughout the evening and we had the opportunity to ask them any questions we had. There were also some arguments to watch between the characters and, spoiler alert, maybe a couple more deaths too.

Also scattered around the room were 5 whiteboards displaying different pieces of 'evidence' and you essentially had the whole evening to work out who did it and why…

As well as the evening of entertainment, we were also served a three-course meal! We had:

  • Bruschetta
  • Hog roast with salad
  • Eton Mess
For me, the standout course was the dessert, in the summer there is no better dessert than Eton Mess, am I right?!

Back to the murder... Now, I’m going to be honest, we were miles off with our guess. I don’t think Poirot will be wanting me on his team any time soon.

We had such a fun time on the night so if a Murder Mystery event is coming to a location near you, I’d definitely recommend checking it out!

Thank you Cholderton Rare Breeds Farm for the invite!

So, you're looking for somewhere a bit nicer to go for dinner in Salisbury... Now, don't get me wrong I don't have any Michelin star recommendations for you here, just places we tend to head to if we're looking to spend a bit more. They're all in the city center and also independent businesses, so great ones to add to your list to visit in 2023....

Where To Go In Salisbury For A Nicer Dinner...

3 places to go in Salisbury for a nicer dinner

01. Cafe Diwali

This is actually a new contender for the list as I only visited recently myself. It's located on Crane Street, a couple of doors down from The Salisbury Orangery, and not far from the cathedral. They serve a wide range of Indian street food including curries and sizzlers.

I know this post is about dinners but on their lunch menu are 'Thali Platters' which consist of a choice of one of three curries, rice, vegetable dal, pickle, naan, and pappad. These are between £12.95 and £14.95 and are a great way to have a taste of the menu without spending too much. For reference, when Elliot and I went to Cafe Diwali for dinner we had a curry each (which came with a naan), a rice to share, and a beer each and spent a total of £50. So, it's certainly on the pricier side but the food was truly delicious.

It was very busy when we arrived so I'd definitely advise booking in advance. The staff are all really friendly and whilst it doesn't look like the most eye-catching place from the outside, trust me, the food is delicious. The Butter Chicken was a solid 11/10 and I've tried a fair few in my time.

02. Nole

Perhaps a bit predictable for this post but their pizzas are just that good.  If you've been around a while you'll have seen me mention Nole previously, and for good reason. They have a restaurant in the Market Square in Salisbury, a kitchen at The Pembroke Arms in Wilton, one in Hindon, and one in Neveravon too. Elliot and I have been to the one in the city center as well as Wilton.

Their pizzas are delicious and we've always had great service whenever we've visited. This pizza featured here was the meat special when we visited; a sourdough pizza topped with pepperoni, roquito peppers, and honey. Deeeeelish.

For reference, at the Wilton branch (The Pembroke Arms) a discretionary 12.5% service charge is added to the bill. So, when we visited 2 pints and 2 pizzas with the charge came to a total of £45.

To the best of my knowledge, they don't take bookings but we've never had any troubles when we've turned up. Also, if you don't already follow them on Instagram, give them a follow, their posts crack me up.

03. Tinga

If you're a fan of Mexican food then Tinga absolutely needs to be on your list of places to visit. Their menu is made up of lots of different small plates but they do also have a couple of traditional main meal sized options if that's more your thing. They recommend ordering 2-3 plates per person so we opted for 5 between us.

The food was all brilliant and the grasshoppers need to have their shining moment. Yep, you can order 'Guacamole con Chapulines' which is avocado with red onions, coriander, and tomatoes topped with crunchy grasshoppers. I can't say they were the tastiest thing I've ever eaten, I can distinctly remember their 'earthy' taste. But, as something new to try, it's something you've got to do once.

Reservations are strongly advised and they're often booked up weeks in advance (for weekend evenings etc). They also host bottomless brunches which consist of 4 courses, free-flowing Prosecco, Beers (and mocktails/soft drinks) for £50pp which could be a great way to get to try out a few dishes (and a few drinks)...

So, there we have it, 3 places to go in Salisbury for a nicer dinner... Aka the places we don't visit on a regular basis, rather they're where we head when we want something a bit more special. This is the first of my Salisbury Food Guides so if you have any burning Salisbury foodie questions or want to suggest which I do next, don't hesitate to message me on Instagram!

The Craft Bar Salisbury Arms - Review

The Craft Bar Salisbury Arms - Review

The Craft Bar Salisbury Arms - Review
I'm just going to cut to the chase here. Both the burgers and the Pornstar Martinis at The Craft Bar are hands down the best in Salisbury. Not only are they truly delicious but they're also really affordable too with their weekly offers and discounts. If you follow me on Instagram you'll know that Elliot and I frequent burger Tuesdays at least once a month. So, here we are, here's the big review...

The Craft Bar Salisbury Arms - Review

Set down Endless Street, not far from the Market Square, The Craft Bar is a bit of a hidden gem in Salisbury. They've got both indoor and outdoor seating as well as their outdoor kitchen where they cook all of their food, rain or shine.

Now, we've been to The Craft Bar for cocktails of an evening but for me, the standout is the food. On a Tuesday between 6 and 9 all of their burgers are £7 each which includes a portion of rosemary fries. (They were £6 but we'll put that down to the cost of living crisis.) There are three burgers to choose from; beef, chicken, or vegan. I can't say I've tried either of the other two as I always opt for the beef, it's that good. Adding bacon or cheese is an additional £1.50 per topping, and if you're considering either it has to be the bacon.

The portion sizes are huge and the burgers are always really well seasoned, a little pink, and full of flavour. Cocktails are also 2 for £12 from 5-9, so two burgers and 2 pornstar martinis for less than £30 is a bit of steal in this current economic climate. Plus, in case you couldn't already tell, they're both truly delicious.

Much cheaper than other burger joints in town and also far tastier... What isn't there to love?! The staff are all really friendly and whilst it can be a little quiet on a Tuesday evening, it's well worth it. Delicious food, great prices and supporting a local business? We love to see it!
Pembroke Arms Wilton Review
Pembroke Arms Wilton Review
For Elliot's birthday a couple of weeks ago we headed to The Pembroke Arms in Wilton for dinner. We both absolutely love Nole pizzas and had been meaning to go and sit in the outside area of The Pembroke Arms for the longest time. In fact, a few weeks ago we even tried to stop in but they're closed on a Tuesday, doh. Wilton is about a 10-minute drive from Salisbury City center and beside our first Pembroke Arms attempt, isn't somehwhere I'd actually been before...

The Pembroke Arms, Wilton Review

First and foremost, their outdoor seating area is huge. If you're looking for a sunny pub garden to spend an afternoon, I'd say it's definitely worth getting down to Wilton and sitting in their fab outdoor area. They have their covered garden seating, complete with heaters and a huge fire, as well as lots of picnic benches out in the sun.

We didn't need to book, being a random Thursday evening, but I can imagine it gets pretty busy on a sunny weekend. The car park also isn't the biggest I've seen, so perhaps plan ahead if you're thinking of visiting. Luckily someone was leaving just as we arrived so we managed to nab the last space in the car park!

In terms of food, I wish I could say I browsed the full menu and considered every option. I didn't. We'd spoken about going for a pizza for days so, of course, I went straight for the pizza menu. Elliot and I both ended up having the same, the meat special. A sourdough pizza topped with pepperoni, roquito peppers, and honey, what wasn't there to love?! Considering I'm usually Miss Margherita, I'm so glad I opted for something a little different, it was delicious! The honey wasn't too sweet and the pepperoni was really tasty.

Whilst we waited for our food we saw streams and streams of pies coming out to other tables. Now, if I'd seen the pie menu, I think I could have been swayed away from a pizza. They were huge and looked incredible. Judging by the number of people we saw with them, I'm assuming they taste as good as they look...

A 12.5% service charge is added to the bill so our 2 pizzas and 2 pints came to a grand total of £45 which seems a little steep if you ask me... Perhaps one for a date night or special occasion, eh? Not quite a can't-be-bothered-to-cook quick meal out.

I'm sure I'll absolutely be back to The Pembroke Arms, I feel it could become the new summery weekend go-to...

The Salisbury Orangery Review

After seeing it alllllll over Instagram, this weekend I finally made it to The Salisbury Orangery! Located on the river, by Queen Elizabeth Gardens, the Orangery is a popular brunch spot in the city. There's also a branch in Winchester that is equally as popular, but I'm still yet to visit.

THE MENU

There is quite a variety of different options on the menu. From classic fry-up style breakfasts to fancy topped toasts, to waffles and ginormous pastries, pretty much all of the brunch bases are covered. From looking online, the Winchester menu is slightly different to the Salisbury one, but the general gist is the same. If I didn't end up having a waffle, I definitely would have had the mushrooms on toast - it looked fantastic! They also had quite a range of smoothies, teas, and coffees as well as some alcoholic drink options. There really is a bit of everything for a nice morning brunch.

THE DECOR

With exposed beams and brickwork, and a tree in the middle of the building, it's certainly an aesthetic place. The tables are all glass-topped and filled with foliage. If an Instagrammable spot in Salisbury is what you're after, then The Orangery is definitely the place to be.

THE FOOD

As someone that adores Biscoff it was only natural I had the Biscoff waffle. It came with cream and ice cream, and was truly delicious. The portion size was huuuuge and it was also reasonably priced considering. We had two waffles and two teas and paid just under £24. The bacon and maple syrup waffle was also pretty tasty, but if anything could have done with a bit more syrup.

EVERYTHING ELSE

A couple of other things to note; The Salisbury Orangery doesn't take bookings so it's a turn-up and wait for a table sort of situation. That said, we went on a Saturday at about 1pm and only waited about 10-15 minutes for a table. In a similar vein, it's not a massive place and there aren't that many tables. So, if you're looking to go in a larger group, this is something to be mindful of.

Overall, we loved our visit and the food was pretty tasty. I'd certainly go back and am keen to try the Winchester branch too.
